How to Select the Perfect Size Rug

Choosing the right rug size can completely transform a room. Whether you're furnishing a living room, bedroom, dining room, or hallway, this guide will help you measure your space with confidence and select the perfect rug for every room in your home.

Key Things to Remember

Measure before you buy. Use painter's tape to outline the rug dimensions on your floor. This is one of the easiest ways to visualize how different rug sizes will look in your space before making a decision.

When in doubt, size up. A larger rug helps create a more cohesive layout and can make a room feel more spacious. Just be sure your rug doesn't cover floor vents or prevent doors from opening properly.

FAMILY & LIVING ROOMS

The front legs of your seating should always rest on the rug. If your room allows, placing all four legs on the rug creates an even more cohesive, designer-inspired look. Avoid the "postage stamp" effect by choosing a rug that extends at least 6–12 inches beyond each side of your sofa. As a general guideline, your rug should be at least as wide as your sofa—and often wider.

Most Common Sizes

Small Living Room: 6 × 9 ft

Standard Living Room: 8 × 10 ft

Large Living Room: 9 × 12 or 10 × 14 ft

DINING & BREAKFAST ROOMS

Choose a rug that's large enough for every chair to remain on the rug, even when pulled out from the table. As a general rule, allow at least 24 inches of rug beyond all sides of the table. For most dining rooms, an 8 × 10 or 9× 12 ft  rug provides the ideal amount of space.

Most Common Sizes for a Regular Table

4-person table: 6 × 9 ft

6-person table: 8 × 10 ft

8-person table: 9 × 12 ft

BEDROOMS

The right rug adds warmth, balance, and comfort to your bedroom. Position the rug so it extends beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, while keeping the headboard and nightstands off the rug. A simple rule of thumb: your feet should land on the rug when you get out of bed.

Center the rug beneath the bed, running lengthwise from one nightstand to the other. Ideally, the rug should extend 18–24 inches beyond each side of the bed and at least 18–24 inches past the foot of the bed.

Recommended Rug Sizes

Queen Bed: 8 × 10 ft

King Bed: 9 × 12 ft

Entryways & Foyers

Choose a rug that welcomes guests while leaving 6–12 inches of flooring visible around the edges of the space. Make sure the rug doesn't interfere with the front door opening and allows enough clearance for entry doors to swing freely.

Recommended Sizes

Small Entry: 3 × 5 ft

Medium Entry: 4 × 6 ft

Large Foyer: 5 × 7 or  6 × 9 ft
